Little Bun has been reading more lately, thanks to a new batch of second-hand Chinese picture books I acquired. Among them are classic stories like “Three Little Pigs” and “Sleeping Beauty.” While these stories are familiar, finding the right version can be tricky. The right version means the content doesn’t use advanced phrases or idioms and includes zhuyin to help her read. I’m pleased to have found some books that encourage her to read more.
However, I’ve noticed that she’s been rushing to finish reading and mispronouncing many words lately. She also doesn’t want me to explain phrases she doesn’t know. This is when I feel like just reading alone isn’t enough. I remember what Guavarama said about targeted learning still being necessary. Targeted learning means the child needs to learn different phrases and how they can be used in various sentences. Chinese lessons cover many other aspects too.
Her current 1st-grade level class will end in June. Like with Little Long Bao, I’m also exploring even more advanced classes for her and possibly considering switching to a tutor. I’m not entirely sure what will be best for her.
Side note: Little Bun starts to read in a whisper voice when she’s really interested in a book. I’m glad to see she’s now reading more than just looking at the pictures when she’s reading on her own( instead of reading like an assignment with me). This is definitely a significant achievement.
