Just had a chat with my husband over lunch. We’ve decided to forgo Chinese afterschool programs and skip Chinese summer camp this year. It’s making me wonder where our kids will get to use Chinese if we’re not even going back to Taiwan this summer. Seeing more posts on Facebook about summer camps in Taiwan is making me second-guess our decision. However, upon reflecting on how we reached this decision, it really came down to our resources, particularly the money needed for two kids to attend these camps. In NYC, summer camp costs range from $300 to $1300 per week. If I can save some money and use it to take the family to Taiwan, I’d prefer that. Now, I’m worried if simply watching Mandarin cartoons and participating in a few online classes, as we normally do, will suffice. In conversations with other parents who have their own concerns about their kids, we’ve concluded that it’s tough for parents to determine if the decisions we’re making are truly beneficial or leading in the direction we desire. This seems like an ongoing dilemma of parenthood – never knowing for sure.
